Life is a Metaphor
[Props to Christa and Claire] What you learn from course descriptions for honors classes: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture."
Is it better for the environment to ride your bike or to drive? First, think about how much extra energy you spend while riding your bike. Nutristrategy says that at a moderate pace, you will burn 508Kcal for 12 miles. That is the same amount of potential energy you gain by going up 11 200 ft. You use food as fuel, a car uses gas. But how much energy is used to make the food? I don't know, but you have to think of all the production factors, like shipping and field use and yada and all the machines that run that, and Their gas usage. Also the added time that it takes to ride makes a less efficient system (nothing gets done on the road). As well as thinking of the need to wash more clothes, and a shower.
Random ramblings aside, it takes a lot of work for you to ride your bike, and I would guess (without any justification) that for most distances, its just more efficient to take the car.

you completely ignored the effects of riding a bike or driving a car. the waste that comes from you riding a bike is all completely biodegradable and can be reused as a new source of fuel.
It takes more then the sun to grow food silly;)
