And the polls are in!
Election day was yesterday. Well, reelection day more accurately. Everyone was screaming and honking their horns until about 2 am. We were all a little bit scared but it all worked out alright.
Things are picking up! School just began for the kids and in a few days we will begin teaching them which should take up a good portion of our time. We are also working with a few schools to try to get their costs down. They are boarding schools and so they need to provide room and board for the children as well as classroom instruction. Most schools have some sort of garden set up which sometimes provides enough food for the entire school, but not always. One school also makes a legendary trek to fetch water which consumes about an hour of each day! If we could help these schools be more self-sufficient it would be great. Although they are focused on providing education to the poor (and vulnerable) and only charge about $25 a term with three terms a year it is still too much for many parents.
I have been thinking a great deal about development lately and I have tried to determine what these people (as well as anyone) truly want and need. I am confident that they need security: food security, water security, home safety, health security etc. These securities provide the people the ability to be independent and act for themselves which is the foundation of happiness. The cheapest and simplest form of security however is not provided by fences or insurance policies, it is education. As people learn and gain the capacity to depend on their own intellect they rely less on arbitrary authority and more on themselves.
